Michelle

A friend wrote this article a while back. Once, I would have been just fine if all the guns in the country were gathered up and melted down. After all, they're just tools meant for destruction, aren't they? and lord knows, I wasn't the destructive type...

and CO2 revolver

Hi-res

At some point, I received a CO2 revolver from my boyfriend and a Barbie doll to blow away. Barbie stayed alive, but several soda cans in my parent's back yard didn't fare very well over Christmas break, thanks to my pretty good aim. I found out that I genuinely enjoyed being outside, hearing the *plink* of the pellets hitting the aluminum, and I decided to join my boyfriend at the range for a little target practice of my own the next time he went.

Okay. So the guy behind the counter *did* laugh at me when I told him what caliber I was shooting: "An airgun? We don't get many of those around here (hee-hee)..." (I swear, I never thought I'd ever hear one of *those* big, hulky guys giggle). And a friend that joined us seemed a bit amused as well--until, of course, they saw the center of my shoot-n-see targets getting greener and greener and greener, and eventually falling out completely.

Q aiming a .22
Hi-res

Since then, I've moved on to a .22 caliber pistol. It's okay, just not as fun as my airgun. Someday, I'll get the nerve to try my boyfriend's 9mm. Although I'm pretty certain that shooting a 9mm would be even less enjoyable than the .22, I think it's important to know how to use any weapon you store in your house--that way, you're able to unload it if necessary.

As it turned out, her first centerfire pistol was a .32ACP Walther PPK/s. Fiocchi 73gr ball ammunition proved most reliable in it. [oleg]

On Gun Safety...
Guns are never safe. Never. Not even my airgun is "safe." Learn how to use any gun that you have in your own home -- that will at least make them relatively safe in your own hands.

On guns and self-defense...
I don't like to think of guns as tools for killing people. I would much rather use Mace than a gun in self-defense, if I could. Once, we had discussed an attempted rape: in an ideal case, I'd rather have the perpetrators apprehended and see them get prison time... that way, they'd get exactly what they wanted to give out. Killing them outright wouldn't be real justice... but knowing they were the victims of the same assault? That would be...

Hand with 9mm shells

If it were absolutely necessary to preserve my own life? hmm... that one's tougher. I know what Oleg would say here, but I really can't be certain of what I would do... it would depend entirely on the situation. But the decision would have been made before I reached for a gun. I don't believe it's a very good idea to try and "scare" a criminal away with a weapon. If you've pointed a gun at someone, you'd better be prepared to fire.

Protecting a stranger's life? I'm not Rambo. I'm not Annie Oakley. If I could run away, I most likely would. I'm certain that the situation would determine whether or not I would try to kill someone to protect another nameless human being. It would be highly unlikely that I would risk my own neck to protect someone else's, however (as cold and heartless as that sounds; I am a coward at heart when it comes right down to it).

There is only one instance that I can think of when I would be likely to use a gun to actually *kill* another person (jeez, it's difficult to type that!)... that would be only if it were absolutely necessary to protect a loved one. I hold human life in high regard, but if it came down to loved one's life versus an assailant's, the assailant would lose.
